A boszorkánymester [részlet]
A kulcs története
A kocsma álmos, fülledten duruzsol,
várja az esztendő első hajnalát.
Nyaláb pohárral a veresember.
Mindenből hoztam, kedvedbe járjak.
Soari Júlia zúgatva a hátteret
elnyomja a pillanatot.
Ki kell bírnom a vonatig, aztán huss.
A kibírást az időveszteségre fogalmazza.
Menne. Olajozná a hajlatokat
dió és pézsmaolajjal,
hattyúfogas fésűvel kefélné a haját – készülne
a boszorkánytalálkozóra.
a veresember most elébe csapja a kulcsot.
Tessék – inti is.
A veres nem mond semmit.
– Egyedül akarsz maradni?
A veresember bólint.
– Hazaküldesz?
A veresember nem bólint, int: Hess!
Soari Júlia magára rántja hímzett ködmönét,
hárászkendőjét köré csavarja,
átlöki a kulcsot.
Engem te ne küldj haza, megyek magam
– sziszegi, már a kocsmaajtóban.
Kint zuhogó eső, lent ragyogó jég.
Júlia nem tudja, hol van, merre induljon.
Balra fordul. Aztán megint balra. Fények. Sötétség.
Szálkásan zuhogó eső. Aztán megint balra. El egy
telefonfülke mellett. Egyetlen számot tud fejből,
a boszorkánymesterét. Az egyetlent, amit most nem hívhat.
Bajban nem.
Megfordul, hátha méterekkel elmaradva ugyan,
mögötte lohol a bocsánatért a veresember.
Tudja, nincs nála semmi, nincs mennie kihez.
Szólt a pincéreknek: otthon várja,
meleg fürdővel, konyhaszékkel a kád mellett,
meleg konyhával és csak neki melegített itallal.
De nem.
A sarokasztalnál békés egymagában borozgat
a veresember.
Innét kezdve nincs remény, nincs kegyelem.
Illetve: ha nincs remény, kegyelem sincs.
Menjünk haza, mondja a veresembernek.
Mindkét szeméből jő a könny.
Gyűlöli.
Ne sírj, soha ne sírj férfinak.
Félreérti, morogja a füstből a boszorkánymester.
De sír.
A könny az egyetlen, mi meg nem fagyott a gyűlölettől.
A boszorkánymester iránti gyűlöletből,
aki őt ideengedte.

THE STORY OF THE KEY**
The tavern dozes, humid and drowsy,
humming softly as it waits
for the first dawn of the year.
A bundle of glasses before the red-haired man.
I brought a little of everything, to please you.
Soari Júlia lets the background roar,
drowns out the moment.
I only have to endure until the train,
and then—gone.
Endurance is her word for lost time.
She would leave.
Oil the folds of her body
with walnut and musk,
brush her hair with a swan-toothed comb—
prepare herself for the witches’ gathering.
Not until next year, perhaps, but
among witches a year is no year at all
when a woman is apprenticing herself
to a craft.
She flinches when the key ring lands on the table.
The gate key, the garden key, the guardhouse key—
all on one ring.
The red-haired man, who only moments ago
asked her to be gentle with him,
to stroke his face as she spoke,
to lean into his shoulder,
now slaps the keys down in front of her.
There.
He gestures.
The red-haired man says nothing.
— You want to be alone?
He nods.
— You’re sending me home?
He does not nod. He waves her off:
Shoo.
Soari Júlia pulls on her embroidered sheepskin jacket,
wraps her fringed shawl around herself,
pushes the keys back.
Don’t send me home. I’ll go on my own,
she hisses, already in the tavern doorway.
Outside, rain pours down;
below, ice gleams.
Júlia doesn’t know where she is,
which way to go.
She turns left.
Then left again.
Lights. Darkness.
Rain splintering down.
Left again. Past a phone booth.
She knows only one number by heart:
the Witchmaster’s.
The one she must not call now.
Not in trouble.
She turns back, half-hoping the red-haired man,
a few meters behind,
is running after her with an apology.
She knows she has nothing,
no one to go to.
She could run into drunks,
they could hurt her.
She is just about to turn back
when, at the last left turn,
the door of a worn-out tavern glows—
tired revelers, threadbare music.
Whoever runs in circles around their own tail
never truly gets lost.
She slips inside, up to the gallery.
She hopes the red-haired man has left her a message.
That he told the waiters: she’s expected at home—
a warm bath,
a kitchen chair by the tub,
a warm kitchen,
a drink heated just for her.
But no.
At the corner table, calmly, alone,
the red-haired man is drinking wine.
From here on, there is no hope, no mercy.
Or rather:
where there is no hope, mercy does not exist.
Let’s go home, she says to the red-haired man.
Tears come from both her eyes.
She hates him.
Don’t cry. Never cry for a man.
You misunderstand, mutters the Witchmaster
from the smoke.
But she cries.
Tears are the only thing
not frozen solid by hatred.
By her hatred for the Witchmaster—
who allowed her to come here.
